On March 17, 2010, Deerfield Beach Middle School student Josie Lou Ratley was bullied and seriously beaten by a Deerfield Beach High School student over text message exchanges. The attack left Josie with a traumatic brain injury.

Josie Lou Ratley continues to undergo rehabilitation. While she is making progress, she still has a long way to go. She has to re-learn everything most of us take for granted. Her long-term-prognosis from her injuries is still unknown and it could take years to determine her prognosis for a full recovery.

Josie's mother Hilda Gotay is extremely grateful for the generous outpouring of support and assistance from the community. If you would like to aid in Josie’s recovery, here is how you can help:

Josie Lou Ratley Video:

On September 13, 2010, Attorney Sean Domnick and Hilda Gotay, Josie Ratley's mother, appeared on the Today Show to show Josie’s progress. This video shows Josie's slow progress as she works with an education therapist.


On May 25, 2010, Josie Lou Ratley's doctors released her from the Rehabilitation Center where she was undergoing extensive physical and occupational therapy. This video is of Josie's family and friends welcoming her home.
