As the Baby Boomer generation continues to retire in large numbers, the problems and severity of elder abuse are expected to increase according to the National Association of Area Agency on Aging.

According to the American Psychological Association each year an estimated 2.1 million American’s fall victim to psychological, physical, sexual, financial, or other forms of abuse and neglect. The number is most likely higher as expert’s estimate that for every case reported there may be as many five cases that are not.

Elder abuse cuts across all socioeconomic groups, cultures, and races, according to the National Center on Elder Abuse (NCEA). And it can occur anywhere - in nursing homes, assisted living facilities, other institutions and in private homes. Older people who have Alzheimer’s or Dementia are especially vulnerable, as are those who have a substance abuse problem - or are cared for by someone who does.

Abusers may be spouses, children, family members, personal acquaintances and professionals in a position of trust or opportunistic strangers.

Signs of abuse may include (but are not limited to): infections, broken bones, rapid weight loss/gain, bruises, cuts, bed sores, physical neglect, lack of personal hygiene, unusual behavior, agitation, sudden change in finances, changes to legal documents, etc.

Hollywood Legend Mickey Rooney recently testified before a senate committee on aging (“Justice for All: Ending Elder Abuse, Neglect and Financial Exploitations”) regarding his own abuse and bullying by his step children. Rooney hopes his testimony will encourage other victims to stand up for themselves. The goal of the conference was to draw attention to the widely underreported problem and coordinate federal, state and local efforts to combat it.
